Phlebotomy Technician

The Phlebotomy Technician is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team. Their main job description is to obtain blood specimen by venipuncture and micro collection. They typically work under the supervision of Medical Technologist or Laboratory Managers.

EICC has designed a 9 week, 144 hour program to prepare students for a career as a Phlebotomy Technician. You will learn basic medical terminology, point of care testing, anatomy and physiology and more. In addition to obtaining phlebotomy principles and techniques, graduates will be eligible for examination through ASCP Board of Certification. This course is a two-part structured program that provides classroom lectures as well as hands on clinical competencies.

After completing the program, participants should be able to perform specimen collection, processing, handling and order of draw, know the blood composition, blood tubes, coagulation and venipuncture protocols, and know the "Role and Scope of Practice" for a Phlebotomy Technician in a Laboratory Setting.

Phlebotomists are employed in hospitals, medical group practices, public health facilities, insurance carriers and other healthcare settings. The demand for Phlebotomy Technicians has increased substantially with the overall complexity of healthcare services.

Job opportunities exceed the supply of well-trained, motivated professionals within this very important role.

To take the Phlebotomy Technician program participants should be able to:

Read, write and speak English at the 6th grade level
Show proof of TB Mantoux test results within the current year & Hepatitis B Series started
Show proof of current seasonal flu vaccine
Be a High School graduate or have a GED
Criminal background check from the Department of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Health & Human Services Abuse Registry

When students satisfactorily complete all requirements of the program, they are eligible to take national certificate examinations such as ASCP or National Center for Competency Testing.
